Tutorial 1 - 3 stride - 20m rule
When designing a course every corner must allow a minimum of 3 strides to and from each fence and a turn with a diameter of at least 20m.
Every corner must have:
- At least 42' (12.75m) straight line after the first fence. 6' (1.83m) for landing and 36' (11m) for 3 strides
- A turn that is at least 20m (66') in diameter
- At least 42' (12.75m) before the second fence. 36' (11m) for 3 strides and 6' (1.83m) for take-off.
For a basic U-shaped corner, the jumps should be at least 24m from the edge of the arena and at least 20m away from each other. See first pic.
If jumps are too close to the boundary, horses do not have enough time to see the second fence. See second pic
If the turn is too tight, it makes the corner too difficult for a horse to keep its rhythm between the fences. Experienced horses will need to collect and shorten their strides to make the turn. Inexperienced horses simply lose their rhythm and usually jump the second fence poorly.
