Tutorial 2 - Roll back turns

In Tutorial 1 3 stride - 20m rule we outlined the need to allow 3 straight strides after landing, a turn with minimum 20m in diameter and then 3 straight strides before the second fence. In this tutorial we apply this rule to Roll back turns, where the turn is between 180° and 270°.

Like all other corners, rollback turns can ride very well if set correctly. However, if set too tight there is likely be unnecessary faults at the second fence and many that clear it are likely to jump it in poor form. Remember as a course designer you must aim to have all horses jumping well. Even if they have a few faults, not just the clear rounds. If you are causing horses to jump badly, you need to learn or else you will have a very short career as a course designer!

Roll back turns need to be set further away from the boundary as the turn makes a bigger arc on the circle. See pic 1.
If the jumps are set close to each other, make sure there is a significant angle between them. If there is an insufficient angle the horses must turn a much tighter turn than 20m. See pic 2.

Either turn one of the jumps to allow a greater turn or move the jumps further apart. See Pic 3
