Lesson 5 Straightness by going forward
Lesson 5, Straightness by going forward. When you have control and your horse going forward, the next step is to have you horse going straight. Straightness is when you have each hind leg going on the same track as the leg in front. There are three methods to straighten your horse, going forward, side aids and cross aids.
With a green horse, going forward is the only method you have. By pushing you horse on it straightens for you, or in better words becomes less crooked. It is a crude method, but an essential step to get started.
As you horse starts to go forward, it will try to cut the corners, now start using a bit of inside leg to ask for bend. This is the first step towards the next method of side aids.
By going forward not only straightens your horse but also frees up its movement and gets more attuned to your leg aids.
