Lesson 9 Teaching Leg Yields

The last video showed Georgie taking offence to my leg. While she can be a bit of a sassy madam, she also did not understand what I was asking. One vital exercise to teach your horse to move off your leg is a leg yield.

A leg yield is a movement where your horse moves sideways off a single leg pressure. Start at walk and about 1-2 meters inside the track. Your horse will naturally move to the track. With repetition, your horse will begin to understand that a single leg on the horse means to go sideways or move laterally. When you can move laterally at a walk, try a trot and then canter.

A basic leg yield is a relatively easy movement to do, but correct leg yield takes a lot to master. A true leg yield has the horse going straight with inside leg pressure and a firm outside hand.
